The Bomberos (Firemen) are vigorously training in the surf, running the beaches and practicing rescue techniques in preparation for Semana Santa. (Holy Week). The beaches will fill up with Mexicans as they flock to the sunny climate for a week of vacation. The other day I saw them running up and down in formation waist deep in the surf shouting some group chant. Looked like some military drill.
Unexpected! I need to upgrade my opinion of the local Zihuatanjeo Fire Department!! We always held to the belief that training should focus on the most common problems -- those situations most likely to occur -- rather than the unusual emergency. Most of the time (50%), I think this must mean rescuers need endurance and physical conditioning, and the other 50% would be technology and honed skills (CPR, first aid, etc.). It's nice to see Mexicans doing this in preparation for crowds of other Mexicans, and not just touring Canadians, Americans and other foreigners. On another note, we're off to Mt St Helens today! The sky will be blue, the sun will soon rise and the beautiful Pacific Northwest will be at its finest!!
