Getting to Las Gatas

Water Taxis
You can get to Playa Las Gatas, a small remote beach in Zihuatanejo bay, by walking the footpath or by taking the water taxi from the municipal pier.  Buy your round trip ticket for 40 pesos and hop on a panga.  These taxis double as fishing boats when they have clients.  Las Gatas got its name from the whiskered nurse shark that use to inhabit the waters.

  1. The Cats! I avoid that beach! They ought to call it The Wolves! My one and only (and last) experience out there is one long memory of how many people tried to hustle me, and then argued with each other whenever someone got their wish. This is the dark side of the free market, the "evil world of capitalism" the liberals are so quick to point out. I think I'll stick with Playa Madera. On the other hand, I did find a trail over the peninsula from Las Gatas (behind the vendors and through their backyards) to an all-natural, unspoiled beach at the base of a steep bank. I remember it well because I found four beautiful leopard-like shells. I still have them on display in our memory table. There is also a long, stair-stepped path ascending the steep hill behind the vendors on the east end of the beach. It is hardly ever used, and leads to the wealthy mansions and gated communities high on the bluff. I've been down it from the top side, and noticed many unusually good views of the bay looking north. By the way, it was 70 degrees near Mt Helens yesterday, 74 degrees in Happy Valley and 72 degrees in Fairview!
