Z-Fan

Tropical Palm Fan
A nice green organic palm fan. Why do fans work?  We have 7 indoor ceiling fans and two outdoor ceiling fans here.  We don't use air conditioning, but the fans keep us cool especially at night.  I love the heat here, but Karen always likes to have a hand fan to keep her cooled down. There is something to the gentle breeze across the skin that refreshes. We find the light ocean breeze especially comforting. There is a science to it.  Something about evaporation and heat loss.We even talk in terms of the "Wind Chill Factor".

One time in my youth, I was driving in California.  I didn't have any air conditioning and the fan was not much help. All it did was blow the hot air around. It was well into the 100s and I was miserable.  So miserable that it affected my reasoning.  I reasoned that perhaps if I turned on the heater, it would actually be cooler than the air temperature, thus it would cool things down.  I tried it.  It didn't work.

  1. The older I get, the more obvious is life's delicate balance. I remember feeling invincible as a kid, but later learned the brain only develops rational thought (frontal cortex) around 25 years. Now I know! Ha! God is sometimes likened to wind, water, light and fire -- all necessary for life -- and yet these forces kill those who challenge them. Last year, high winds in the Columbia River Gorge reached 117 mph on Crown Point, picking up a tourist's dog and sending it over the abyss. That dog could be any of us... life requires humility. We all appear less stupid when we're humble! Love the photograph of the palm. It looks back-lit, meaning you've got protection/shade from too much sunlight and high temps. I think I've studied this photo for about ten minutes!
