Fresh Coconut

Yesterday, Karen and I set up our chairs on the beach at our friend Jose Luis's place.  One of his workers, Jorge, climbed a palm tree bare foot without any safety equipment or lines and cut out some coconuts.

Jose Luis used a machete and processed the coconuts for drinking and then later, opened them for the white meat.  He said that years ago while working in front of the Hotel, he did this up to 70 times a day for the guests.

Coconuts are plentiful and it this case free.  Much like apples just growing on the trees.

  1. Now I'm jealous (in a nice way)! Do you think we're too old to learn how to climb coconut trees like Jorge? Probably. But Jose could show us how to swing the machete, so we could see/feel how coconuts are prepared. This is right up near the top of my "Coolest Things To Do" list when in the tropics. I also like the way you've isolated Jose and the coconut with bright colors, leaving the rest in blacks, grays and whites. Fun to look at, as I've spent several minutes just looking at your creation. (I mentioned once before, I think, how NGM photographers consider it a success if readers spend more than 10 seconds on one of their magazine photographs!) The chap sitting behind Jose looks too white to be Mexican, so I'm guessing it's not Jorge. Maybe a tourist? I spent quite a bit of time on your home page photo yesterday, as well, and noticed -- for the first time -- there are two children (not one) behind the wood see-through wall (for a total of four). That is a great photo, and the more I look at it the more I see.
