Shopping at Sam's

Children's Home
Today Karen and I went shopping at Sam's Club. Next week construction begins on the new kitchen for the Children's Home and there will be an additional 12 workers to feed for two weeks.  We decided to help coordinate the food this year for the children and workers so that it would not come out of the house budget.  During construction, there will be a temporary outdoor kitchen where meals will be prepared.  Kind of like camping. Tomorrow we will go to the outdoor market to buy the fruits and vegetables.

The other day, Karen took out a few volunteers to show them how to ride the combi and how to get to the home.  One of the ladies asked one of the kids what they would like more, toys or food?  The little girl looked up and said food.

  1. Wow! Your narrative sure ends with a striking statement! I might read this to the kids, as they are finicky eaters, rejecting foods they don't like (anything without sugar in it). They don't even finish food they order at restaurants, which drives me nuts. All three are thoroughly Americanized, with the result they cannot comprehend being hungry, or how millions of children around the world go to bed with empty stomachs and even die of starvation and/or malnutrition. They were not like this at the orphanage in Morelia, where food rationing/quality is a day-to-day challenge. I saw a statistic the other day: 70% of Americans are overweight and/or obese, and obesity is one of the reasons the brain shrinks with age. Americans are also undernourished, meaning they get enough food for satiation, but not enough to promote health. The kids at the Children's Home may actually be healthier than many American children.

  2. I thought I'd mention I like the paint job on the Children's Home. The last time I was there, I remember it being an off-white, kind of dusty looking. The bright yellow is a much happier color and all the nice architectural lines make it fun to look at. I especially like the sidewalk wrapping around the front. It makes me wish I was part of the crew doing the work!
